New User Education Courses starting in October 2007 for Groups !

 

 
'We are pleased to announce that we are presenting an extensive programme of information and searching skills courses. They are held 10:00 a.m. - 12:30 each Monday (with the exception of 29 October) in the Loungue in the Postgraduate Centre (nr. Eccles Old Rd).

Here is a summary of what is covered in each course

Course 1: Beginner’s guide to searching Health Information

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • How to evaluate a website – what to look for – the good, the bad and the ugly!
  • Register for an ATHENS ID
  • Access and search reliable, specialist websites for health information
  • Search smart: How to get more out of Google
  • How to use the Trust books and journals catalogues

Course 2 (Searching Skills I): Beginner’s guide to literature searching

Course 2 (Searching Skills I): Beginner’s guide to literature searching

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Formulate a search strategy
  • How do I know which words to chose?
  • How to display your results
  • How to access full-text journal articles from your search
  • How to save your search for future reference

 

Course 3 (Search Skills II): More tips for literature searching

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Plan a search
  • Formulate a focused search question
  • Understand and use the database index (such as MeSH) to carry out an effective search
  • How to re-run your search and deliver new results to your desktop
  • How to remove duplicate results
  • How to use ‘clinical queries’ on Medline and introduction to filters

 

Course 4: Finding the evidence: specialist evidence-based review sources: Up-to-Date, Dynamed and Cochrane Library

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Search, browse and understand the format of a topic review in Up-to-Date
  • Search, browse and understand the format of a topic review in DynaMed
  • Search and browse the Cochrane Library
  • Understand the key elements of a systematic review
