1. Registration with the Trust Library

Welcome! The library and its staff are here to help you find the information you need. Please ask if you need help.

To join the library you must be either:

All you need to do is to complete a registration form. Your details will be entered on to our computer system and a number allocated while you wait. Access to, and full use of, all library facilities is available immediately on registration.

2. Loans

The loan period is either one or three weeks. If an item has not been reserved it can be renewed up to three times, in person, by phone or by e-mail.

There is a limit of six items per person, except for journals, where there is no limit.

If an item is out on loan, you may reserve it by completing a reservation card.

4. Journals

The journal catalogue holds details of all our print and electronic journals. This can be searched by title and by topic. Articles from electronic journals may be downloaded directly.

An up to date list of journals subscribed to by the library is listed in our catalogue and is also available on our website at:

If you are still unsure whether we hold a journal or how to access our electronic subscriptions please ask at the counter.

Print journals are shelved in alphabetical order, whilst current issues are put on separate display at the shelf ends of two aisles. They remain in the current issues dispaly for seven days.

Articles from journals not held in the library can usually be obtained (for a fee) via the Document Request service (see below).

 

5. Electronic Access to databases and e-journals - Athens Passwords

Access to databases, electronic journals, ebooks and other electronic resources is usually via an Athens username and password.  To register go to http://www.library.nhs.uk and click register on the left-hand side of the screen, the form will then take you through the details required.

The majority of our e-journals are available at http://sciencedirect.com and http:// www.Swetswise.com , ebooks are available through Myilibrary at:

For journals that have non-Athens usernames and passwords please ask at the counter.

6. Document Request Service

Items not held by the library can be requested via the document request service.

The charge for each item variesaccording to the source from which it is obtained - the current list of charges is displayed by the counter.

How to request an item:- A document request form must be submitted to the library either by person, post or fax. An electronic version of the form is also available to download from the downloads section of the library home page.

For Staff and students of the University of Manchester we are able to provide a cheaper service. To be able to administer this we must see your CURRENT John Rylands University Library Card and your Membership number should be quoted on all requests.

7. Photocopying

There is a self-service photocopier in the library. Current charges are 5p per A4 page and 10p for A3. Please ask at the library counter for details.

8. Literature Searches and Information SkillsTraining

The library welcomes requests for training on how to search healthcare databases and find information on the Internet.  One-to-one sessions can be booked in advance in person at the counter, by telephone, or by email. 

Group sessions are held regularly, notification is through the library website and posters distributed around the hospital.   Departmental group sessions can also be booked.  Please ask at the librarycounter for details of any of these courses.

9. Computer Services

All computers are connected to the hospital/NHS network. There are six computers in the PC Room available for drop-in and training sessions.  In addition there are nine laptops available for loan for use within the library, an ID badge should be provided as a deposit.  All laptops must be back in the office 10 minutes before closing time.

10. Electronic Awareness Service

If you have a particular research interest, search profiles may be set up and monthly updates of publications in that field emailed or posted to you. Please ask at the library counter for details.

11. Study Space

For quiet study there is a quiet room available towards the rear of the library.

For more interactive group work a meeting room is available; please ask at the counter for access arrangements.

12. Newspapers

A selection of local national newspapers is available in the recreation area.  

13. Electronic Access

Drop-in computers are connected to the hospital and University of Manchester networks. In addition, there are ten laptops on the Trust network, available for usr within the library.

Please ask at the counter if you need to know which computers you may use.
