The Salford Royal Biomedical
Repository is an integral part of the
Sample banking facility The primary purpose of the facility is to provide a secure and safe environment for the preparation and storage of biological samples (including blood, serum, plasma, urine and solid tissue) in a manner that will maximise their integrity and viability for future research.
Sample preparation The new laboratories are purpose-built for the handling of human biological material. Facilities include a class II biohazard cabinet for handling infectious material, blood-spinning centrifuges and access to histological preparation areas. In addition samples can be aliquoted, labelled, catalogued and tracked to ensure traceability and to maximise research potential.
Sample storage The vast majority of samples are stored in banks of ultra-low temperature freezers. These are continuously monitored for temperature fluctuation, and linked to a centralised alarm system that alerts staff in the event of problems. Where appropriate, samples can also be stored in liquid nitrogen at temperatures below ‑170oC.
Regulatory compliance The facility operates in compliance with all relevant regulatory guidelines. This includes working from standard operating procedures and adhering to local policies designed to provide a regulated and safe environment. Where appropriate, samples are stored under the research license from the Human Tissue Authority.
Support for clinical research By providing a regulated and professional facility, the biological repository aims to simplify and support the role of clinical and academic researchers within the Trust. This includes consultative advice for project planning, and practical help through the provision of regulated and cost-effective processing and storage facilities.
