1. Registration with the Trust Library

Welcome! The library and its staff are here to help you find the information you need. Please ask if you need help.

To join the library you must be either (i) employed by Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, (ii) a student or university employee based on the hospital site, or (iii) work or study within the NHS in Greater Manchester. Access to, and full use of, all library facilities is available immediately on registration.

To register with the library all you need to do is complete a registration form. Your details will be entered on to our computer system and a number allocated while you wait.

2. Loans

The standard loan period for all stock is three weeks, whilst a one week loan operates for our more poular books and a 24 hour loan is available for journals. If an Item has not been reserved it can be renewed in person at the counter, or by telephone and email up to three times.

There is a limit of six books or videos per borrower for trust staff and four books or videos for students; however any amount of journals can be borrowed.

If you cannot find the book or journal you require, please ask at the counter. If an item is out on loan, you may reserve it by completing a yellow reservation card at the counter. Please put your name and address on the back of the card,- we will use this information to notify you when the item is available for you to collect from the library.

PLEASE NOTE: All library systems are shut down 10 minutes before closing.

3. Books

Our book catalogue, including our ebook collection, is available at:

4. Journals

An up to date list of journals subscribed to by the library is listed in our catalogue and is also available on our website at:

If you are still unsure whether we hold a journal or how to access our electronic subscriptions please ask at the counter.

Print journals are shelved in alphabetical order, whilst current issues are put on display to the right of the computer room for seven days.

Articles from journals not held in the library can usually be obtained (for a fee) via the Document Request service (see below).

 

5. Electronic Access to databases and e-journals - Athens Passwords

Access to databases, electronic journals, ebooks and other electronic resources is usually via an Athens username and password.  To register go to http://www.library.nhs.uk and click register on the left-hand side of the screen, the form will then take you through the details required.

For Journals that have non-athens usernames and passwords please ask at the counter.

6. Document Request Service

Items not held within the library can be requested via the Document Request service.

The charge for each item variesaccording to the source from which it is obtained - the current list of charges is displayed by the counter.

How to request an item:- A Document Request form must be submitted to the library either by person, post or fax. An electronic version of the form is also available to download from the downloads section of the library home page.

For Staff and students of the University of Manchester we are able to provide a cheaper service. To be able to administer this we must see your CURRENT John Rylands University Library Card and your Membership number should be quoted on all requests.

7. Photocopier

The photocopier is located in the corner of the library furthest from the entrance. Flexicards are available from the counter for a 50p deposit. To add credit to your card you will need to add value through the value loader machine, this is located by the photocopier. Place your flexicard in the slot, then feed the machine with any type of coins to increase the available credit; all copies cost 5p.

NB The photocopier is switched off ten minutes before closing, so please ensure you have finished before then.

8. Literature Searches and Information SkillsTraining

Request forms for literature searches are available to download from our website, or at the counter. Alternatively ring in with the details including, title of search, keywords and limitations such as age ranges and language.

The library welcomes requests for training on how to search healthcare databases and find information on the Internet.  One-to-one sessions can be booked in advance in person at the counter, by telephone, or by email. 

Group sessions are held regularly, notification is through synapse, the library website and posters distributed around the hospital.   Departmental Group sessions can also be booked.  Please ask in the library for details of any of these courses.

9. Computer Services

All computers are connected to the hospital/NHS network. There are six computers in the PC Room available for drop-in and training sessions.  In addition there are nine laptops available for loan for use within the library, an ID badge should be provided as a deposit.  All laptops must be back in the office 10 minutes before closing time.

 

 

 

10. Electronic Awareness Service

If you have a particular research interest, search profiles may be set up and monthly updates of publications in that field emailed or posted to you. Please ask at the counter for details.

11. Quiet Room

The quiet room is currently to the left as you come into the building, and has space for twelve. If you wish to take laptops and books into the quiet room please ask at the counter.
